ChatGPT Reaches 400 Million Weekly Users
ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot by Sam Altman’s Open AI, now has 400 million weekly users, which is a huge jump from 300 million in December.
Brad Lightcap, the Chief Operating Officer of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, shared these numbers with CNBC News on Thursday.
According to Brad Lightcap, this growth of ChatGPT can be due to its increasing popularity and utility among individuals and organisations.
“More and more people are hearing about ChatGPT, trying it, and finding it useful,” Lightcap explained in an interview with CNBC News. “They see their friends using it, and they want to use it too,” he added.
OpenAI has announced that it now has 2 million enterprise customers, a significant increase from the 1 million customers reported in September.

Many employees are driving the adoption of ChatGPT within their organisations, having first experienced its benefits through personal use, the company said.
Also, companies such as Uber, Morgan Stanley, and T-Mobile are among OpenAI’s esteemed enterprise customers. These organisations are leveraging ChatGPT’s capabilities to enhance their operations, improve customer engagement, and drive innovation.
OpenAI’s developer community is also experiencing rapid growth, with an increasing number of developers utilising the company’s AI models to power their applications and services.
Traffic from developers has doubled in just six months, while usage of OpenAI’s advanced reasoning model, o3, has grown fivefold.
Despite ChatGPT’s success, OpenAI is facing increasing competition from rival AI companies. In January, Chinese AI firm DeepSeek made headlines with its own AI chatbot, prompting concerns about the potential for intellectual property infringement.

OpenAI has accused DeepSeek of copying its models, highlighting the need for robust intellectual property protections in the rapidly evolving AI arena.
OpenAI is also confronting legal challenges, including a high-profile lawsuit filed by Elon Musk, a co-founder of the company.
Elon Musk has taken issue with OpenAI’s shift toward a for-profit model, which he claims is inconsistent with the company’s original mission. Musk even attempted to acquire OpenAI’s assets for nearly $100 billion, but the offer was ultimately rejected.
