Consumer Law Project: Meta Joins Hands With NLSIU And IIT Bombay

Tech giant Meta has announced that they will support the National Law School of India University’s (NLSIU) new research project on consumer law. This significant project will be executed along with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) in collaboration with the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA). The project will examine how large language models (LLM) can be used for developing public solutions for enhancing efficiency in India’s consumer grievance redressal system.

This initiative will explore the feasibility of leveraging Llama 2, the openly available large language model of Meta, in developing and evaluating a proof-of-concept of a citizen-centric chatbot and a decision-assist tool in the consumer law segment. Meta mentioned in its statement that the research project will explore how LLMs can help consumers or judicial authorities in the context of ongoing oversight and control by human decision-makers.

Notably, the chatbot will guide consumers on the procedural aspects of drafting a complaint and answering questions relating to consumer law in the country. Meta said that the decision assist tool will also support searching for case laws and summarizing documents to provide assistance to judicial authorities in the area of consumer affairs.

According to Prof. Sudhir Krishnaswamy, the Vice-Chancellor of NLSIU, this project aims to improve awareness on consumer rights and provide accessible assistance by leveraging Meta”s Llama2. “We’re excited to extend our support to NLSIU for its research initiatives building AI tools leveraging Llama 2,” said Joel Kaplan, Meta”s Vice President for Public Policy, in the statement. Meta unveiled Llama 2 to compete with OpenAI”s GPT models and Google”s AI models like PaLM 2.
