Google made a surprising announcement on Wednesday that its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered editing tools will soon be available to all Google Photos users for free. AI photo editing tools, including Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Portrait Light, were previously available only to Google Pixel users and paid subscribers.

The tech giant mentioned in its blog that the new features will be rolled out to Google Photos on May 15. Google made this significant move as the world is witnessing a surging popularity in AI editing tools. With this upgrade, Google is set to compete against the growing number of AI-powered editing tools on the market. The new features will also be available on Pixel tablets.

Google introduced the Magic Editor on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro devices last year. The search giant claims that with the help of Magic Editor, users will be able to make complex edits even without pro-level editing skills. This tool will improve the overall composition of a photo by allowing users to reposition the subject of their shot to the best spot. Using the Magic Editor, users can also create new content to fill in the gaps after repositioning their subject.

“Now we’re expanding access to Magic Editor to all Pixel devices. Additionally, all Google Photos users on Android and iOS will get 10 Magic Editor saves per month. To go beyond this limit, you”ll need a Pixel device or a Premium Google One plan,” said Google in the blog post on April 10. Meanwhile, Magic Eraser will help users remove items from photos.
