WhatsApp is taking major steps to improve user privacy by introducing a new “Protect IP address in calls” feature. WhatsApp unveiled this feature to improve security when making calls through the messaging platform. WhatsApp has reportedly rolled out this new feature in its beta versions for both iOS and Android.

WABetaInfo reported that the new feature will add an extra layer of security to the calls by protecting the users” IP address and location from malicious actors. This new option works by redirecting calls through WhatsApp servers to protect users” IP addresses. At the same time, Apple also says that call quality will be slightly affected by this feature due to the encryption and routing processes.

WhatsApp users can find the “Protect IP address in calls” feature located within the “Privacy” settings under the “Advanced” section. WABetaInfo also reported that this security option makes it definitely harder for anyone in the call to infer the location of the user by securely relaying through WhatsApp servers. This feature will be more helpful when users are engaged in a WhatsApp call with unknown contacts. The report also reveals that the new update will be rolled out soon to more users. However, WhatsApp has not yet revealed a specific release date.
