Meta-owned WhatsApp will end its support for certain older Android phones and iPhones on October 24, 2023. The messaging platform has acknowledged that it will discontinue supporting devices running on Android OS version 4.1 and older. WhatsApp modifies its compatible device list every year.
Beginning on October 24, 2023, WhatsApp will stop working on several smartphones, including the iPhone, Samsung, Google, Sony, LG, Huawei, and other brands. The Samsung devices that will not support WhatsApp include the Samsung Galaxy S2, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S, and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. On the other hand, the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c will also stop supporting WhatsApp from October 24.
The other major devices on this list include the HTC Desire 500, Huawei Ascend D, Huawei Ascend D1, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z, LG Optimus G Pro, HTC Sensation, Motorola Droid Razr, Sony Xperia S2, Motorola Xoom, HTC Desire HD, LG Optimus 2X and Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc3. WhatsApp wrote in its blog that users will be notified directly in WhatsApp ahead of ending the support.
WhatsApp is making this move to focus on creating new features for newer devices. “To keep up with the latest advances in technology, we routinely stop supporting older operating systems to point our resources towards supporting the latest ones,” WhatsApp mentioned in its FAQs. WhatsApp stated that they selected devices that may not have the latest security updates or might not have the functionality required to run WhatsApp. It should be noted that most of the devices on this list are not widely used today.
