The American artificial intelligence research organisation OpenAI took down the GPT account of an Iranian group which generated content influencing the US election scheduled for November 2024. On Friday, OpenAI said that the company had dismissed the ChatGPT account linked to an Iranian group to prevent potential interference in the US election and to avoid other related issues.

It was identified by the ChatGPT operators that an account named Strom-2035 generating content on various topics, creating commentary on the candidates related to the US presidential election along with the conflicts befalling in Palestine’s Gaza, Israel’s attending Paris Olympic Games and sharing the content via several social media platforms.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI probed that the account generated long texts, social media comments and articles propagating certain views and aspects ahead of the US election. However, the posts didn’t gain anticipated attention and haven’t achieved any engagement on the platforms.

The company had identified certain posts and text content but had no likes or comments and found fewer engagements. Later OpenAI suspended the account and blocked access to ChatGPT. The company said that it will continue monitoring such accounts and users who attempt to violate policies and spread hate speech on any media platforms or among compatriots.

Ahead of the US presidential election, social media platforms are deluged with opinions supporting candidates who match user’s politics, especially defending or opposing democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican rival Donald Trump keeping them in the fray over debates and disputes. Since it has been expected to be a tight race between them, OpenAI scrutinises the majority of the ChatGPT users who potentially violate GPT policies and generate content to propagate their views subsequently influencing other users on various media platforms.
