Artificial intelligence (AI) is constantly changing the world. Generative AI tools have become a significant factor in nearly every industry. While tech companies around the globe are investing heavily in AI technology, the potential dangers of AI are also rising. A recent report published by Kaspersky’s Digital Footprint Intelligence Service indicates that cybercriminal forums are discussing how to exploit AI technology, like ChatGPT, for illegal purposes.

As per the Kaspersky report, around 3,000 dark web posts are found to be discussing the use of ChatGPT for illegal purposes. The posts are mainly about techniques for jailbreaking, creating malicious alternatives to the chatbots, and lists of malicious prompts. Notably, these kinds of discussions peaked in March 2023. The Kaspersky report also revealed that some cybercriminal forums have ChatGPT or similar tool responses built into their default functionality. The report also says that a high volume of conversations around tools like WormGPT, XXXGPT, and FraudGP have also been discovered. According to Kaspersky, these are language models advertised as an analogue of ChatGPT but without the limitations of the original and with additional functionality.

Google defines the dark web as a part of the internet that lets people hide their identity and location from other people and from law enforcement. Google says that the dark web can be used to sell stolen personal information. In July 2023, Independent reported that thousands of stolen login credentials for ChatGPT are being listed for sale on dark web markets.

The Kaspersky report says that in addition to hacked accounts, automatically created accounts with access to the free version of the model are widely sold on the dark web. The report pointed out that the increasing popularity and usage of AI by attackers are alarming. Technology is evolving rapidly, and the capabilities of language models may soon reach a level at which sophisticated attacks will become possible.
