Billionaire Elon Musk urged for the immediate release of Telegram app’s CEO Pavel Durov citing the importance of free speech. He expressed his views following the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, claiming that he is under threat in France. On the X platform, Musk shared a series of messages highlighting the disparity in treatment between Durov’s arrest and the lack of action against Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg.

Despite Instagram’s significant issues with child exploitation, Zuckerberg has not faced arrest as Musk suggests that this is because Zuckerberg cooperates with governments by censoring free speech and providing backdoor access to user data. Musk implied that this double standard undermines the principles of free speech and raises concerns about government influence and control.

Elon Musk further emphasised his concerns about the erosion of free speech in Europe by sharing a post from OSINTdefender and adding his ominous commentary. He painted a dystopian picture of Europe in 2030 in a place where simply liking a meme could lead to execution and highlighted the potential dangers of overreaching regulations on online expression.

Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, will appear in court to face a range of serious charges, including terrorism, drug trafficking, fraud, money laundering, and facilitating the distribution of child abuse content. As a dual citizen of France and Russia, Durov could potentially be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison, according to French media reports.

His arrest was prompted by Telegram’s alleged failure to adequately moderate its content and Durov’s refusal to collaborate with French authorities which led to a search warrant from the French National Directorate of Judicial and was later arrested at the French Airport.
