Israel vows to retaliate the Iran attack on its military sites. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tehran has committed “a big mistake”, and “will pay for it”. US President Joe Biden’s administration also pledged unwavering support for Israel and warned Iran of “serious consequences” for its attack against US’ closest ally.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) launched hundreds of missiles targeting Israel’s military sites in the occupied Palestinian territories. Iran said it has exercised self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Speaking to media, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, “we exercised self-defence under Article 52 of UN Charter, targeting solely military and security sites in charge of genocide in Gaza and Lebanon”.

He said Iran has been restraining for two months from retaliating the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukur, and Hassan Nasrallah. He further added that Tehran has concluded its attack on Israel “unless Israeli regime decides to invite further retaliation”.

Araghchi said in case of further Israeli aggression, Iran’s response would be stronger and more powerful.

Israel military and political echelon said the Iranian attack will simply not to go unattended, and the retaliation will come at a time and place of Netanyahu’s choosing.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennet said Iran’s attack is the “greatest opportunity in 50 years” to change the dynamics of the Middle East by moving to “destroy Iran’s nuclear programme, its central energy facilities”.

Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers of US call for the country’s attack on Iran. Senator Lindsey Graham says the US should coordinate an “overwhelming response” with Israel and that Iranian oil refineries “need to be hit hard”. Another senator, Marco Rubio called for “direct and disproportionate” measures against Iran that can threaten “the survival of the regime”.

US Vice Presidential candidates Tim Walz and JD Vance have both promised to support Israel. Experts warn that the unconditional US support for the country has led to a widening escalation in the Middle East.

At the same time, Australia, Japan, and France condemned Iran’s attack on Israel and called for de-escalation in the region.
