32-Year-Old Faces Trial In Dubai for Attack On Man He Claims Abused Him As Child

A Gulf national is standing on trial before the Dubai Criminal Court for allegedly attempting to kill a 39-year-old, accusing him of sexually abusing the former as a child. The 32-year-old suspect had denied the murder attempt, saying that he had no intention to kill the claimant, who alleged that the 32-year-old tried to strangulate him after the late-night prayer during Ramadan in April inside a mosque in Al Qouz, UAE.

The suspect was taken into custody shortly after the attack, but he was later granted conditional bail with travel restrictions, a report by Khaleej Times said, citing police sources.

To substantiate his murder attempt claim, the 39-year-old submitted a hospital report confirming that he suffered soreness below his left jaw and right-sided lower neck abrasions. He has also moved a non- guilty plea, denying the suspect’s rape allegations, asserting that he never had any previous troubles with him.

According to claimant’s statement, the 32-year-old walked towards him and attacked him from behind strangling him shortly after the Imam finished the prayer. The two allegedly fell to the ground while the attacker’s hand remained on the claimant’s neck. Those around reportedly rushed towards the two and separated them to deter further conflict. The claimant also stated that the 32-year-old repeatedly threatened to kill him in front of several witnesses.

According to Nasser Hashem, the suspect’s lawyer, his client had no intention to kill the claimants, and the sudden attack by the suspect was triggered by the trauma of having been allegedly harassed by the 39-year-old when he was five years old. He was reacting when he saw the abuser at the mosque, Khaleej Times quoted the lawyer. Hashem added that he would submit his  defence argument when the court reconvenes for the case soon.
