Hezbollah has confirmed that its leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, is safe following Israeli airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut. Rumours circulated on social media suggesting that Nasrallah was targeted during the large-scale Israeli assault on the Dahiya neighbourhood, but Hezbollah security sources reassured that he remains unharmed in a secure location, reported multiple media outlets including Iran’s Press TV and Reuters.
The attack, which took place on Friday, razed multiple buildings and caused significant destruction. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that two people were killed and 76 others injured. The strikes, carried out by Israeli F-35 aircraft using bunker-buster bombs, flattened at least six buildings in the Haret Hreik area, according to Lebanese media.
Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the airstrikes, calling on the international community to intervene and halt what he described as Israeli tyranny and a “war of extermination” against Lebanon. He further criticised Israel for ignoring international ceasefire appeals.
Lebanon’s Health Minister, Firass Abiad, confirmed that several residential buildings were destroyed, with civilians still trapped under the rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing, and the death toll is expected to rise as more debris is cleared.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who authorised the strikes from his hotel room in New York, stated in a UN address that Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah would continue.
