IAEA Convenes Special Session On Iran's Request: Report
As per the recent updates, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) special session convened today in Vienna at Iran’s request. The special session reflects escalating tensions following recent Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites and military targets, with Iran launching 370 missiles and over 100 drones at Israel since the conflict started.
Earlier, Iran had strategically used the IAEA sessions, in 2014 and 2016 meetings where Director General Yukiya Amano addressed nuclear cooperation frameworks, suggesting this session may aim to leverage international oversight to counter Israel’s military actions and US support.

Reportedly, in the recent conflict from June 14, 2025, Iran’s retaliation strategy includes ballistic missiles to bypass Israel’s Iron Dome, which has a 90% interception rate against short-range threats, highlighting the technological arms race driving this diplomatic race.
Following Israel’s attack on Iran, the IAEA reported that the airstrikes damaged key Iranian nuclear facilities. The attack on nuclear diplomacy has likely set Iran’s uranium fuel cycle back by months, as per the United Nations.
IAEA Director General Rafael Marianao Grossi told the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that Israel destroyed Iran’s main nuclear-fuel site in Natanz. IAEA also confirmed that among the multiple strikes struck Iran’s uranium-conversion facility at Isfahan, near Tehran, cause grave damage to the site.
This critical attack not only freezes Iran’s nuclear site but also the production of further product. However, the clash has had no effect on stockpiles while limiting Iran’s potential to amp up their position.
Abbas Araghchi said that Natanz was operated under the monitoring of the IAEA, and that the strikes on the facility risked a radiological disaster.
