Russia, China Accuse America Of “Escalation” Of War And “Causing New Turbulence” In West Asia

Edited by Fathimathu Shana

Russia called a United Nation Security Council meeting, in which it accused Washington of escalating the war in West Asia, after US attacked some 85 sites which it claimed to be of Iran-backed group. Reportedly, dozens were killed in the US attack. The US attack was said to be in retaliation of the killing of three US military personnel in Jordan last week. Moscow called US attack as violation of international law.

Washington pushed back against the accusations by Russia and said that Russia called the UN Security Council meeting under false pretence, and America has a right under the international law to defend itself, defend its troops, and pointed out that the troops were in Jordan as part of an international coalition to fight the ISIS. US was supported by United Kingdom and some other countries who believed in United States’ right to defend itself.

Zhang Jun, China’s ambassador to the United Nations told the UN Security Council that US has “seriously violated the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria and Iraq” by carrying out air strike on both countries over the weekend. He said, “the Unted States said it does not seek to create conflicts in the Middle East or anywhere else, but in fact it is doing the opposite”. He added that the US military actions are undoubtedly “causing new turbulence in the region and further intensifying conflicts”.

US has attacked several sites in Syria and Iraq as a response to a drone attack that killed three US troops in Jordan. American President Joe Biden said that at his direction the US military forces “struck targets at facilities in Iraq and Syria that the IRGC (Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps) and affiliated militias use to attack US forces”. Biden also said that the attack will continue “at times and places of our choosing”.

During the Security Council meeting, UN members on the Council accentuated their concerns about the escalatory behaviour of these attacks and possibility of the war in the Middle East widening.
