Washington warned Israel about possible failure in its war with Lebanon’s Hezbollah. A report said Israel may not succeed in winning against Hezbollah as its army would be stretched too thin with its war on Gaza and Lebanon. Washington Post reported about officials from Biden Administration “privately” warning Israel about the possible risk of losing if indulged in a direct conflict with Hezbollah, by citing the assessment from the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).
The report also cited unnamed officials as saying that the Israeli occupation force has targeted “US funded and trained Lebanese Armed Force” more than 30 times since the beginning of Israel-Hamas war. It said, “US officials are concerned that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may see and expanded fight in Lebanon as key to his political survival amid domestic criticism”.
According to the US officials, Hezbollah too doesn’t want a major escalation. The officials also said that since October 7th, when Hamas resistance group launched its “unprecedented” attack on Israel, Netanyahu’s officials have discussed about launching a preemptive attack on Hezbollah, which has faced sustained opposition from Washington in fear of the conflict drawing in Iran, who support both Hezbollah and Hamas, and other proxy forces in to the conflict, “an eventuality that could compel the United States to respond militarily on Israel’s behalf”, said the report.
Earlier, Politico has reported about US getting ready to intervene if the war on Gaza escalates into wider regions. Citing four officials who are familiar with the issue, the news organization reported that there is internal conversation that said there is high potential for the US to be drawn into another Middle East war. According to three US officials who were said to have direct knowledge about the discussion, the US military is drafting plans to attack the Houthis is Red Sea, which included striking Houthi areas in Yemen.
