“We Are Waiting For Our Turn": Palestinian Journalist From Gaza Rips Off His Protective Gear

An Israeli air raid in Gaza’s Khan Younis killed a Palestinian journalist Mohammed Abu Hatab and his 10 family members. Mohammed Abu Hatab was working for Palestinian broadcaster Palestine TV in Gaza. Palestine TV accused Israel of carrying out a “deliberate assassination” of the journalist.

“Our colleague Mohammed Abu Hatab fell as a martyr along with members of his family in an Israeli bombardment against his home in Khan Yunis in the south of the territory”, the Palestine TV station said in a statement.

In a reaction to that, on live TV, Salman Al-Bashir, a Palestine TV reporter from Gaza ripped off his protective gear.

““No one cares about the catastrophe or the crime that we endure in Gaza. No protection for anyone or anything. We are waiting for our turn, one after the other,” journalist Salman Al-Bashir said as he was doing it.

“This gear and helmet do not protect any journalist. We are victims, live on air. We are victims awaiting our turn to be killed. Mohammad was here half an hour ago (reporting). Now he lies dead with his family in this same hospital,” an emotional Salman Al-Bashir said.

The Palestine TV has said in its statement that the attack “is a bloody message to terrorise Palestinian journalists,” intended to stop them from “conveying the suffering of the Palestinian people and exposing the crimes of the occupation”.

However, while saying “no matter how great the sacrifices are and no matter how many crimes the occupying state commits against our journalists,”, the media house said it would continue to carry out its duty.

Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera quoted Palestinian journalists’ union as saying that 27 of its members have been killed in Gaza since October 7.

The death toll in Gaza since October 7 has reached 9,227 today.
