Who Is Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's Chief Negotiator Who Secured The Deal With US
Tehran, Iran: Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator, has emerged as a key negotiator and one of the most prominent figures within the Islamic republic’s leadership.
The efforts of Ghalibaf have found fruit as the Islamic Republic finally secured a deal with the United States. The 64-year-old former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander and three-time presidential candidate rose to become a central figure in Iran’s diplomatic and strategic efforts following the deaths of other top leaders.
Ghalibaf spearheaded the war effort and led the high-stakes negotiations that resulted in the June 15 agreement to end the conflict with the US and its allies, possibly including Israel. The US attacks had killed several key Iranian figures, including the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei and top security official, Ali Larijani.
After Larijani’s assassination, Ghalibaf became the new public face of Iran’s diplomacy and war effort. However, Ghalibaf still has to be responsible to the higher authorities in the country. Notably, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was named as his father’s successor as the next supreme leader of Iran, has not yet appeared publicly after allegedly being wounded in an airstrike.
