Pakistan singer Ali Zafar criticised Islamic preacher Zakir Naik for his controversial remark on unmarried women. Zakir Naik, who is in Pakistan on a state visit, was heard as comparing unmarried women to a “public property”, and added that they cannot be respected.
The video went viral on social media. Responding to the remark, Ali Zafar said the problem lies in men who see women as such. He also cited verses from Holy Qur’an to back his statement.
In the video that went viral, Zakir Naik said, “There is no way an unmarried woman can be respected, if there are no single men available, she either has to marry an already married man to be respected or else she is public property”.
Responding to this, the singer put forward a “healthy criticism”. Pointing finger at men, he cited Qur’an verses from the 24th Chapter, which directs men to lower his gazes, before directing women to do so.
He wrote, “Since you appreciate quotes, here is the Quran instructing men before women in Sura An-Nur,24:30. “O Prophet! Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what they do.” (Surah An-Nur, 24:30) It clearly teaches us men first to respect women and purity begins with one’s own actions. After this, Allah also guides women with similar instructions: “And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments except what normally appears…” (Surah An-Nur, 24:31) Sir, respect is always mutual and that is what the Quran teaches”.
He also added his personal opinion. He said “we (men in general) have suppressed women enough for last many centuries and made them feel guilty for nothing. It’s time we correct ourselves first and let them flourish and follow their dreams like we want for ourselves. I hope you will not take offence to this healthy criticism. May peace be upon you”.
With all due respect Dr. Sahab. There is always a third option.
A woman can live a respectful and independent life, being a working woman or a mother, or both together, or the life she chooses for herself, just like millions of women around the world do and are equally respected… https://t.co/cAISOeDxS6— Ali Zafar (@AliZafarsays) October 9, 2024
