BNP Chief Tarique Rahman Sworn In As New Bangladesh Prime Minister

Dhaka, Bangladesh: Tarique Rahman, chairman of BNP has sworn in as Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, February 17. All the newly elected Bangladesh lawmakers have also been sworn into parliament, days after the party swept the first vote since the 2024 student-led uprising that expelled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The Tarique Rahman-led party had secured more than a two-thirds majority in the national elections held last week.

BNP secured 209 out of 297 seats, giving it a strong mandate to form the government, while the Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats. Hasina’s Awami League did not contest the polls.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, along with several other foreign dignitaries, including Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal attended the event. Nepal Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma, Sri Lanka’s Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, and United Kingdom’s Indo-Pacific Under-Secretary, Seema Malhotra, were also among the attendees list.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the grounds throughout Tuesday to await the proceedings amid tight security. People reportedly wanted new faces and dynamics in the parliament.
