"He Will Eat You Alive": Takeaways From Trump-Harris Debate

The first faceoff between US Presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Donald Trump had a heated debate for the first time, and may be the last time before the upcoming Presidential election in November.

Both the Democratic and Republican candidates on the defensive as the debate got combative. Harris attacked Trump on abortion limits, his legal woes, and fitness for office. It appeared that Harris pressed all the wrong button for Trump, making him deliver a flurry of falsehood-filled retorts.

Here are key takeaways from the debate:

Economy:

Trump and Harris locked horns over the economy in the opening moment of the debate. Harris attacked Trump on his intention to impose high tariffs on foreign goods – a proposal she has likened to a sales tax on the middle class – while touting her plan to offer tax benefits to families.

She said Trump has left the country is worst unemployment during his tenure as President (2017 – 2021), and the Democrats had cleaned up the mess.

Trump attacked Harris on the persistent inflation during President Joe Biden’s term. Allegedly, he overstated the level of price increases. Trump also pivoted quickly to his top issue, immigration, claiming again (without evidence) that immigrants from “insane asylums” are crossing the U.S. southern border with Mexico.

Abortion:

Harris zeroed in on Abortion, one of Trump’s vulnerabilities, for taking part in appointing three US Supreme Court justices, who overturned Roe v. Wade. The move left more than 20 states in the country with what she called “Trump abortion bans”. Harris said Trump would Introduce a national abortion ban if he wins the election.

Immigration:

“I’ll tell you something, he’s going to talk about immigration a lot tonight, even when it’s not the subject that is being raised,” said Harris.

“Our country is being lost, we’re a failing nation,” Trump said, referring to the illegal migrants.

Trump also claimed that immigrants were eating pets in an Ohio town, forcing the moderator to tell him that there is no proof of that.

Russia-Ukraine war:

Harris said NATO allies are so thankful that Trump is no longer President. She or else, “Putin would be sitting in Kyiv with his eyes on the rest of Europe”. She also said that Putin was a dictator who would “eat you (Trump) for lunch”.

Trump hit back at Harris by calling her “the worst Vice President in history”. He said that she failed to prevent the war by negotiating between Ukraine and Russia before the invasion.

Hamas-Israel war:

Trump said the war would have never started if he was the President. He added that Harris “hates Israel. If she is president, Israel will not exist in two years from now”.

Kamala Harris accused Trump of attempting to “divide and distract from the reality”. “It is very well known that he admires dictators, and wants to be a dictator,” she said.

She said she want the war to end immediately, and reiterated that “I have my entire career and life supported Israel and the Israeli people”.
