On June 19, an Indian farm labourer, Satnam Singh, who was working in Italy, died after being left on the road reportedly by his employer. The labourer was injured on June 17 while he was in work on his farm and the accident had severed the victim’s arm in Latina, a rural area south of Rome where many Indian workers are living. The victim was left on the road without receiving any help from employers, according to a report by news agency AFP.

Informing the death of an Indian worker, Labour Minister Marina Calderone said that the migrant worker was abandoned in very serious condition and then died. She condemned the incident calling it an “act of barbarity.” the news agency reported quoting the minister. The minister also said that the authorities were investigating the incident and expressed her hope that those responsible would be punished.

Reacting to the incident, Indian Embassy in Italy said that it is aware of the very unfortunate demise of an Indian national in Latina, Italy. “We are in contact with local authorities. Efforts are underway to contact the family and provide consular assistance,” the Embassy wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The Italian trade union Flai CGIL likened the incident to a horror film saying that the migrant worker’s employers “dumped” him like a “bag of rubbish near his home.”

The centre-left Democratic Party condemned the treatment of Indian worker, calling it a “defeat for civilisation”. The party further said it is close to Satnam Singh’s wife and all his loved ones. It also raised the concerns that the violence of the conditions in which Singh was forced to work, certainly not suitable to protect him from the risk of accidents. The party called those who preferred to hide their duties in extending help to the worker an “atrocious violence” that compromised the victim’s chances of survival.
