What happened so far?

The incident is a continuation of the controversial claims made by the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on Monday. He was addressing the Parliament and alleged that the Indian government had links to the assassination of Khalistani separatist, Hardeep Nijjar.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar was the chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), and was gunned down by unidentified assailants, on June 18, 2023 outside a gurdwara in British Columbia.

As per the records of India’s NIA, an investigation agency, the 45-year old Nijjar was an “absconder”, and carried a substantial cash reward of Rs 10 lakhs on his head. He was also designated by the Indian government as a “terrorist” under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly also supported the PM’s claim and issued a statement.

In continuation, on Monday, an Indian diplomat in Canada was expelled by the country’s government as part of the investigation initiated by the Canadian Prime Minister.

On Tuesday, Indian MEA released an official document rejecting the Canadian government’s allegation saying it as “absurd and motivated”.

“We have seen and reject the statement of the Canadian Prime Minister in their Parliament, as also the statement by their Foreign Minister”, reads the MEA issued official statement.

Soon after releasing the official statement, Indian government expelled a senior Canadian diplomat, Cameron MacKay, based in Delhi and asked him to leave the country within five days. He was the Canadian High Commissioner to India.
