House of Representatives of United States has voted to launch a formal impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden despite failure of the ongoing investigation in finding any evidence of wrongdoing by the Democrat.
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted 221-212 on Wednesday to approve the investigation on whether the American President has garnered any sort of improper benefits from his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings.
The voting came hours after Hunter Biden refuse a call that asked to testify behind closed doors. Three months since the Republicans started investigation against Biden. “We do not take this responsibility lightly and will not prejudge the investigation’s outcome…but the evidentiary record is impossible to ignore”, said Speaker Mike Johnson, as quoted by Al Jazeera.
Authorising the inquiry means that the impeachment investigation will extend to 2024. Joe Biden will run for re-election in the same year and will be having a tight competition with former American President, Donald Trump. Trump was impeached twice during his time in the White House.
Donald Trump now faces four criminal trails. It is alleged that he pushed his allies in Congress to make a move on impeaching Biden, which is considered as his broader calls of retribution against his political enemy.
Following the vote, the American President said, “instead of doing their job on the urgent work that needs to be done, they (Republicans) are choosing to waste time on this baseless political stunt that even Republicans in Congress admit is not supported by facts”.
The voting came after Mike Jhonson and his team came under high pressure to produce the progress in their investigation that failed to provide evidence on the claim that Joe Biden accepted bribes while he is currently serving as the President or between 2009 and 2017, when he was the Vice President.
The investigators of Congress produced a 40,000 pages of subpoenaed bank accounts and several testimonies from high-ranking Justice Department officials who are currently investigating Hunter Biden’s firearms and tax charges.
However, may not be possible to rule out Biden from his current position even if the House of Representatives back impeachment. The Senate would then have to show two-third vote to convict Joe Biden on charges. This would be nearly impossible because in the chamber, Joe Biden’s fellow Democrats hold 51-49 majority.
