Dalit Couple Tied, Beaten And Made To Wear Garlanded Of Shoes In Madhya Pradesh

In Madhya Pradesh”s Ashok Nagar district, an elderly Dalit couple suffered a shocking ordeal, with a group of people tying them into poles, beating them, and garlanding them with shoes. The incident happened on Friday in Kilora village, and the police have registered cases against ten individuals in connection with the event, police said on Sunday. The victim man is 65-year old while the woman is 60. The incident comes amid report noting surge in crime against Dalit in the country.

The couple had recently arrived in the village. They had left the village after the couple”s son had been allegedly involved in eve-teasing the wife of one of the accused, according to Mungaoli police station in-charge Gabbar Singh Gurjar.

However, all the accused persons are absconding, and the police are conducting searches to trace them, the officer added.

After the victim woman filed a complaint, the police on Saturday registered a case against 10 persons under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly with common objective), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 294 (obscene act), and 506 (criminal intimidation), as well as provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, he said.

Notably, the 2022 Crime in India report published by the National Crime Records Bureau shows the atrocities against Dalits have increased in the country. Uttar Pradesh tops the list with the highest number of Dalit assaults, and the state recorded a total of 15,368 cases of crimes against Dalits in 2022.
