BMW has priced the seventh-generation M5 at Rs 1.99 crore (ex-showroom, India) before options. The new BMW M5, the most potent version of the sports sedan to date, has a plug-in hybrid V8 drivetrain. Its pricing is much higher than that of the previous generation model, which was introduced in India in 2021 for Rs 1.62 crore (ex-showroom).

The Mercedes-AMG C 63, which was newly released and has a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder plug-in hybrid engine, costs Rs 1.95 crore, whereas the new M5 is only Rs 4 lakh more expensive. The BMW has a longer range when running only on electricity and is also far more powerful.Like the BMW XM SUV, the new BMW M5 has an eight-speed automatic gearbox with an electric motor, but it still has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. With the addition of 199 horsepower and 280 Nm from the electric motor, the engine generates 585 horsepower and 750 Nm, for a total system output of 727 horsepower and 100 Nm of torque. Through BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive technology, power is transmitted to all four wheels. Additionally, it is equipped with rear-wheel steering and adjustable suspension.

Despite weighing around 2.5 tons, or 500 kg more than its predecessor, the new M5 can sprint from 0 to 100 kph in 3.5 seconds thanks to the addition of the motor and batteries. The regular peak speed is 250 kph, but with the optional M Driver’s Package, it can reach 305 kph. Based on the WLTP cycle, the 18.6kWh battery pack allows for a 69km electric-only range. The BMW M5 can reach speeds of up to 140 kph and 7.4kW of AC charging when in this mode.

The powertrain has three drive modes: electric, hybrid, and eControl. The latter enables braking energy recovery to keep the battery charge steady.  Carbon ceramic brakes are an available option, while M compound brakes are standard on the M5.

The sculpted bumpers and flared wheel arches give the M5 a far more aggressive appearance than the standard 5-Series. In addition, the M5 features a longer wheelbase and a significantly sportier stance than the standard sedan, which is available in India with a longer wheelbase.

An “M5” emblem is placed in the center of a gloss black frame on the grille up front. A more prominent central air dam and wider air inlets at the corners characterize the front bumper’s finely chiseled design, which is encircled by gloss black trim. Redesigned front and rear wheel arches and more prominent sills are features of the M5, which also has an embossed M5 emblem on the rear quarter window region.

On the interior, though, not much has changed. The curved infotainment display screen and the interior will look familiar to anyone who has driven the standard 5-Series. However, it comes with M-specific ambient lighting, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and M-spec seats that display the M5 badge. Additionally, the center console has some updated switchgear to better meet the demands of the performance sedan, including a redesigned gear lever and a few extra buttons. A head-up display, four-zone automated temperature control, a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, a wireless charging tray, a 14.9-inch touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster are just a few of the features.
