Mercedes-Benz India is set to introduce three to four more electric vehicles (EVs) in the Indian market over the next 12 to 18 months. This announcement comes as the luxury automaker had recently launched its electric sports utility vehicle (SUV), the EQE 500, in India. The company is also open to adjusting its portfolio to align with customer preferences, potentially shifting towards petrol powertrains in response to consumer demand. This comes after the Indian government”s recent discouragement of diesel vehicles. Mercedes aims to make 25% of its sales in India come from electric vehicles within the next four years. India”s automotive market is witnessing increased demand for electric cars, and Mercedes is looking to capitalise on this trend.
The EQE 500, which Mercedes has launched in India, is its latest addition to the electric lineup. It has a range of 550 km on a single charge and is now part of the German luxury carmaker”s portfolio in India alongside the EQS and EQB sedans. However, it”s worth noting that the EQE 500 will attract a 100% import duty as it will be imported as a completely built unit from Mercedes” plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
To support the growing adoption of electric cars in India, Mercedes-Benz India is also expanding its charging network. The company has already set up 36 supercharging points (fast charging) out of a total of 140 charging points across India, making it easier for EV owners to access charging infrastructure. This move aligns with Mercedes” efforts to create an ecosystem for electric mobility in India, catering to the evolving needs of customers who are increasingly interested in electric vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz India”s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup and charging infrastructure reflects the evolving landscape of the Indian automotive market. The automaker”s flexibility in adjusting its powertrain portfolio in response to consumer preferences demonstrates its dedication to meeting customer needs. As the Indian government encourages the adoption of electric vehicles and sustainability gains traction, Mercedes-Benz”s strategic moves are in line with the nation”s evolving automotive ecosystem. With its ambitious target of achieving 25% of sales from electric vehicles within the next four years, Mercedes-Benz India is well-positioned to play a significant role in shaping the future of electric mobility in the country.
