The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS is now embracing hybrid power, a significant shift for this iconic sports car. Known for its dedication to its core identity over six decades, the 911 has maintained its appeal by carefully integrating new technologies. Past transitions, like the switch from air-cooled to liquid-cooled engines with the 996 generation and from hydraulic to electric power steering with the 991-gen model, have been met with mixed feelings but ultimately enhanced the 911’s performance and appeal.
The latest 992.2 iteration introduces the 911’s biggest transformation: a hybrid powertrain. This move initially sparked outrage among purists, fearing the 911 would lose its essence. However, Porsche aims to demonstrate that the 911 can adapt and thrive in the evolving automotive landscape. At the Ascari circuit in southern Spain, the new 911 GTS T-Hybrid showcases its potential.
In India, only the standard 911 Carrera and the Carrera 4 GTS are available, priced at Rs 1.99 crore and Rs 2.75 crore, respectively. Unfortunately, the Targa and Cabrio variants face homologation issues. The GTS variant, known for its daily usability, now comes with a groundbreaking hybrid powertrain, marking a new era for Porsche.
The heart of the 911 GTS T-Hybrid is a 3.6-litre flat-six engine with a single electric turbo, producing 485hp. A compact electric motor at the end of the 8-speed PDK gearbox adds 56hp, totalling 541hp and 610Nm of torque. The electric turbo eliminates lag, and the 1.9kWh battery powers the motor without encroaching on boot space. The 400V electrical system runs ancillary functions, making the engine more compact and efficient.
Styling changes in the 992.2 are subtle but distinct. The GTS features new bumpers, front and rear lights, and massive air intakes with vertical slats. These slats open for cooling and close in the rain, distinguishing the GTS from the standard 911. The GTS also has closer-spaced twin exhaust pipes.
A notable interior change is the all-digital instrument cluster, replacing the traditional analogue tachometer. While this may upset purists, the digital display offers flexibility, including configurable rev counters and navigation maps. The cabin remains driver-centric, with physical buttons for essential functions. Additionally, the 992.2 comes as a two-seater, although rear seats can be added at no extra cost.
Overall, the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS hybrid marks a significant yet carefully considered evolution, balancing modern technology with the brand’s rich heritage.
