Red Bull RB17 Hypercar Revealed: 1,200hp V10 and Track-Exclusive Performance

The Red Bull RB17 has been unveiled at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, marking the final project of renowned engineer Adrian Newey before his departure from Red Bull. The RB17 is a groundbreaking hypercar that, according to Newey, surpasses Formula 1 cars in terms of track performance. Limited to just 50 units, this hypercar combines extreme power and advanced technology to deliver unparalleled speed and handling.

Development of the RB17 began in 2021, with the Cosworth-developed engine scheduled for its first dyno test later this year. Track testing is anticipated to commence next summer, bringing the car closer to reality. The RB17 serves as a successor to the Aston Martin Valkyrie, a project that marked Newey’s deep involvement in road car engineering during a past collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull. However, unlike the Valkyrie, which was designed for road legality, the RB17 is a dedicated track machine. It has been engineered by a team of approximately 120 specialists at Red Bull Advanced Technologies.

The RB17 features active aerodynamics and suspension systems adapted from Formula 1, offering a high degree of adjustability to various driving systems. Despite its extreme performance, Newey aims for the RB17 to be accessible and manageable for drivers of varying experience levels. The car’s design incorporates a high-revving, normally aspirated V10 engine, which has been a significant shift from the original plan of a twin-turbocharged V8 and a hybrid system.

The powertrain of the RB17 includes a 1,000hp V10 engine that revs up to 15,000rpm. This engine is paired with a carbon-fibre transmission and a 200hp electric motor. The electric motor not only enhances performance but also serves as a starter motor, reverse gear, and aids in moving the car from a standstill. The RB17 is remarkably lightweight, weighing just 805kg in its most stripped-down form, and measures around five metres in length and two metres in width. It will come with three tyre options, developed in collaboration with Michelin, including slicks designed to maximize the car’s performance and achieve a top speed exceeding 350kph.

As a track-only vehicle, it is not subject to road regulations concerning emissions and safety, but it is designed to meet LMH (Le Mans Hypercar) safety standards. The RB17 is not eligible for any existing race series; therefore, Red Bull plans to offer bespoke track days and experiences to its customers. Additionally, while F1 drivers like Max Verstappen will use simulators to aid in development, the car will also be made accessible to a wider range of drivers to ensure it remains approachable and enjoyable for all.

The Red Bull RB17 is set to be a remarkable track-focused hypercar, combining advanced technology with impressive power and performance. Its limited production run and unique features make it a highly exclusive offering in the hypercar segment.
