Justin Sun, a wealthy crypto entrepreneur bought a unique artwork early this week featuring a banana duct-taped to a wall for $6.2 million.

The artwork, titled “Comedian,” was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. Sun was one of seven bidders and after winning the bid, he decided to eat the banana.

He fulfilled his promise to eat the banana at a luxury hotel in Hong Kong. In front of a large audience, he took a bite of the banana and praised it, saying it was “much better than other bananas” and “really quite good.” Sun also drew parallels between conceptual art and cryptocurrency, calling the artwork “iconic.”


Sun, founder of the TRON platform had initially felt “disbelief” when he won the bid, but soon realised the potential of the artwork and within 20 seconds of winning the bid, he decided to eat the banana. The artwork also sparked controversy and debate with some questioning its value and importance.

The auction saw bidding begin at $800,000, escalating to millions within minutes. The auctioneer cheekily urged participants not to “let it slip away.” Sun acquired not the banana itself but a certificate of authenticity allowing him to recreate Comedian,  re-tape the banana and eat it.
