Amal College Launches Curriculum Redesign Focused On Outcome-Based Learning

Amal College of Advanced Studies (Autonomous), Nilambur, has set in motion a comprehensive curriculum redesign to align with the latest University of Calicut guidelines and the UGC’s Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF). The move reflects a decisive shift from conventional output-based education to outcome-oriented learning, with emphasis on experiential learning, internships, skilling, employability, and entrepreneurship.

The initiative was launched through the college’s maiden Faculty Development Workshop on Curriculum Design and Development, held on Monday, in collaboration with consultants from reputed universities across the country and global practitioners in curriculum innovation. The resource person, Mr. Praveen Kumar Naidu, Visiting Professor at Azim Premji University, and an acclaimed educator, learning experience designer, and facilitator, led the sessions with an international perspective on curriculum design.

P.V. Abdul Wahab, MP, Chair of the Governing Body of the college, inaugurated the workshop. In his address, Mr. Wahab, a successful industrialist and entrepreneur, stressed the urgency of reorienting higher education to prepare students for real-world challenges. “Education must nurture creativity, innovation, and adaptability. A curriculum that integrates industry skills, entrepreneurial capacity, and ethical values will truly empower students for tomorrow’s world. Amal College, with its forward-looking vision and autonomous status, is poised to become a model for transformative reforms,” he said.

The workshop was chaired by Dr. Mohammed Basheer K.P., Principal, who underlined the institution’s commitment to creating innovative learning ecosystems. “This redesign is not a mere academic exercise but a mission to transform student learning experiences by embedding critical thinking, collaboration, and application-oriented knowledge into every programme,” he observed.

Facilitating the academic discussions, Dr. Shihabudheen N., Dean, Department of Academic Affairs, presented the roadmap for curriculum reform. He articulated a vision that integrates the NEP 2020 framework with the college’s academic freedom and the evolving needs of industry and society. “We are moving beyond traditional syllabi to build a curriculum that produces not just graduates, but graduates who are problem-solvers, innovators, and responsible citizens. The nine-step process we have adopted will ensure structured and continuous progress, with the first four steps being implemented immediately,” he remarked.

Deputy Deans Mr. Janesh Babu K.P. and Ms. Sini K., Dr. P.M. Abdul Sakir, Controller of Examinations, Dr. Shemeer Babu T., Secretary of the College Council, Dr. Abbas Vattoli, and Mr. Anujith S. also addressed the gathering, reaffirming the collective commitment to building a curriculum that reflects both academic excellence and societal relevance.

The redesign is especially significant for a college like Amal, which has recently secured the highest NAAC grade of A++ (CGPA 3.59). By embracing experiential learning, interdisciplinary approaches, industry linkages, and entrepreneurship development, the college seeks to create a new benchmark in higher education delivery in Kerala.

Observers noted that such a bold academic reform is highly relevant in today’s context, where industries demand graduates with not just knowledge, but also the ability to adapt, innovate, and lead. The collaboration with experts from reputed universities and global practitioners ensures that the curriculum redesign remains both locally grounded and internationally benchmarked.

Amal College has already initiated several industry-on-campus programmes through its Talrop–Amal College Collaborative Techies Park, the PMJVK Skill Development Centre, and the proposed Industry-on-Campus project by the Government of Kerala, making its learning experience distinct from that of its contemporaries.

The workshop concluded with a consensus among faculty that the initiative marks the beginning of a transformative academic journey for Amal College—anchored not in incremental changes but in a paradigm shift towards impactful, outcome-driven higher education.
