The Kerala government has introduced Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Class 7, with plans to extend it to Class 8-10 next year. As part of this initiative, 29000 robotic kits are being distributed to students which enables 1.8 lakh children to participate in It camps organised by Little Kites. These IT camps aim to foster awareness and expertise in AI and robotics among students. This initiative also focuses on bringing high-tech education to schools.

In May, it was announced that the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) textbook of Class 7 is customised with AI in a chapter named ‘Computer Vision’ allowing students to create their own AI programme that can recognise facial expressions. This tends to enable the identification of seven different emotions on a human’s face.

K Anvar Sadth, CEO of Kerala Infrastructure & Technology for Education (KITE) said that this is the first time in India that all students will have this opportunity to get acquainted with AI. The KITE has developed FOSS-based FOSS (Free and Open-Source Software) which covers language learning, drawing, reading and numeric operations.

Additionally, Traffic Signal, an application developed by KITE allows students to learn about traffic rules and operations. Another major development is that the application also helps students to learn waste disposal through gaming mode and has advanced language labs featured in the textbooks. It also includes fake news detection, and fact-checking in the textbooks after training around 20 lakh school students to identify fake news and phoney on social media which has made it a part of the revised school curriculum by the state education department.
