MIT's Megha Vemuri Questioned On Pahalgam After Pro-Palestine Speech

Massachusetts Institute of Technology has banned Indian American student Megha Vemuri, president of the class of 2025, after her pro-Palestine speech during her graduation ceremony on May 29, 2025. MIT Chancellor Melissa Nobles reportedly sent an email to Vemuri announcing that she will no longer serve as student marshal at the commencement and banning her and her family from campus for most of the graduation day.

Vemuri reportedly acknowledged her speech as a protest from the stage, but called the ban an ‘overreach’. Following the speech and facing online backlash, Vemuri has now deleted her LinkedIn profile.

After her dedicated speech towards anti-Israel sentiments, the student body president has raised eyebrows in India, netizens questioning her ignornace of Pahalgam terror attack, killing 26 people.

Making headlines the MIT grad showed solidarity with the Palesinians with her message adoring Keffiyeh, a symbol of solidarity. Netizens have asked her “After the massacre of innocent Hindus in Pahalgam, where was this fresh MIT graduate, ‘Megha M. Vemuri’?”

Another user said “When Indian-origin students like Megha Vemuri cry for Palestine but stay silent on attacks in Pahalgam or Kashmir, it shows where their loyalties really lie. They enjoy India’s roots but spit on its soil.” However, many other users have defended her due to her American upbringing, while some have called her claims polarised and biased.
