Over A Dozen Medical Aspirants Convert To Secure MBBS Seats In Uttar Pradesh

An absurd incident emerged from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, where over a dozen medical aspirants are allegedly found to undergo religious conversion for admission to minority medical colleges. As per the investigative agencies, the incident fall under the provisions of the Unlawful Conversions of Religious Act, 2021 (UPPUCRA-2021).

The said candidates belong to different states including New Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. These candidates came under scrutiny for allegedly using religious conversion certificates to secure MBBS seats.

Reportedly, out of these candidates seven admissions were cancelled by the counselling board and other seven candidates voluntarily withdrew candidature. The other six candidates, who are from outside UP, have forwarded their documents to their respective states for verification before any legal action is taken.

The Directorate of Medical Edcuation has instructed the counselling committee to investigate the matter througly and verify the submitted certificates in various categories.

To get into the medical and dental colleges all across India aspirants are to appear for NEET (UG). In this exam, various categories of seats are available, under All India Quota, State Government Quota, Central Institutions, Deemed University and Private colleges. Some seats also come under management and NRI quotas, along with the minority quotas. The minority quota lies with private, unaided and aided minority medical colleges.

Minority reservation criteria come under certain state and central government regulations which varies by state. A separate list is maintained for All India Quota seats by the central government.

State counselling are generally centralised and managed by state authorities, where minority quota seats are part of the broader allocation process. Also some private or minority-run institutions conduct their own college-based counselling, where candidates directly apply under minority seats.

A separate merit list is created for minority quota admissions based on the NEET scores and other factors such as qualifying exam marks in some states.
