Rain Disruption: Kerala Education Minister Proposes Shifting Summer Vacation To June-July

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: In a surprise move, Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty on Thursday proposed the shifting of summer vacation to monsoon in the state due to the repeated disruption of classes caused by incessant rain and its after effects.

The minister called for discussion on the possibility of rescheduling the school vacation from April-May to June-July. While talking to the media, the minister said that the development is due to the recurring unexpected rain-induced holidays, hindering studies.

The current situation forces school to conduct additional working days and special classes to compensate the academic requirements. In a Facebook post, the minister pointed out that the school holidays in Kerala are currently in the months of April and May, considering the intense heat during these months, which often causes hardship to children.

The minister then highlighted that the heavy rain during monsoon season – June and July – also cause classes to be canceled and learning to be disrupted. In this context, the minister said, a public debate is being initiated about moving the school holidays from April and May to the rainy months of June and July.

“The idea of May – June is also emerging. I would like to know your valuable opinions and suggestions on this issue,” Sivankutty said, urging people to participate in the discussions. He further posed questions: What are the possible advantages and disadvantages of implementing this change? How will it affect children’s learning and health?, How practical will this be for teachers and parents? How can we model vacation arrangements in other states and countries?

The minister also asked people to comment their suggestions, noting that it would help to start a constructive discussion on this topic.
