SC Rejects Plea Seeking To Hold NEET-SS Exam 2024

The Supreme Court dismissed the plea challenging the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) decision not to conduct the NEET-Super Speciality examination (NEET-SS) 2024 this year. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, Justice J B Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra heard the petition.

The bench termed the NMC decision as ‘fairly equitable’ and refused to tinker with the examination calendar.

The National Eligibility -cum- Entrance Test – Super Speciality (NEET – SS) can be taken by doctors with post-graduate degrees including MD, MS, DNB, or any other equivalent qualification for admission to super-specialty courses.

The court notified the NMC on the plea filed by 13 doctors.

The Supreme Court bench observed that the data provided by the National Medical Commission (NMC) suggested that at least 40% of the students who take the NEET-SS are from the immediately preceding batch. The bench noted that the petitioners would not be prejudiced if the exam is deferred to next year as they have appeared in the NEET-SS before. The court said that if the exam is held this in 2024, then the 2021 Post-Graduate batch students, who would be completing their courses only in January 2025, would lose their chance.

The bench accepted the petitioners prayer to lay down the NEET-SS 2024 exam schedule. The schedule shall be announced within 30 days the bench ordered. The bench further directed to held the exam within 3 months from January 2025.
