Asit Kumar Mal To Run From Bolpur District On TMC Ticket

Asit Kumar Mal the sitting Trinamool Congress MP from Bolpur has been nominated by the party again to run for the 18th Lok Sabha elections. He had been part of the West Bengal legislative assembly from 1996 till 2016.

In his last tenure of the lower house, Mal registered 75 percent attendance in the house. His house performance remained satisfactory as he participated in a total of 22 debates and asked 5 questions. Recently, citing changes in the party’s district core committee, Asit Kumar Mal was removed from the position of core committee member.

However, his report card among the voters in the Bolpur constituency did not score well as in a report of ETV Bharat, West Bengal, as some people said that they never saw his face and he only came to visit during elections. On the other hand, Mal claimed that he had done a lot of work for the constituency, which included providing electricity, promoting agricultural activities, building roads in rural areas, etc. Notably, Santiniketan and Visva Bharati fall within the Bolpur Lok Sabha constituency. People say that he did not do anything for the development of both of them.

TMC has a stronghold in Bolpur constituency as all the 7 state assembly seats are won by the party in 2021. Although from 1971 till 2014, it had the political hegemony of Left. In the 2019 general elections TMC candidate Asit Kumar Mal registered a win with 47.85 percent votes, but in BJP”s performance was significant as it has seen an uptick in the total votes with 25.44 percent votes.

Bolpur is an SC category parliament seat comprised of part of Bardhaman and Birbhum district. It has a literacy rate of 64.34 percent. The constituency has a total 30.07 percent Muslim, 28.61 percent SC and 6.65 percent ST population.

BJP has also declared its candidate from the constituency. It has fielded Priya Saha from Bolpur.
