After high-octane campaigns and elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana, the counting of votes has concluded. Flipping the predictions of Congress victory in Haryana made by several exit polls on its heads, the Haryana assembly elections have confirmed a hat-trick for the BJP. In spite of facing strong anti-incumbency issues, farmers’ and wrestlers’ protests, the BJP reigned its third term in the state. Despite Congress’ early lead, the BJP made a strong and surprising comeback with winning 48 seats, crossing the majority of 46.
The Congress, on the other hand, won 36 seats. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and independent candidates won two and three seats, respectively.

Notably, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) opened its political account in Doda Constituency and secured its first win with Mehraj Malik defeating BJP’s Gajay Singh Rana with a margin of 4,538 votes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude to Haryana and attributed the saffron party’s victory to “politics of development and good governance.” Responding to the party’s performance in the Jammu and Kashmir elections, PM Modi praised the JKNC for their performance this elections and assured the people of the party working for the welfare of Jammu and Kashmir.
After a series of anti-BJP sentiments in the state, several top Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi’s frequent visits combined with the several exit polls predicting a clean swipe for the grand old party, the Haryana election results have been a shock to the party.
Congress senior leader Jairam Ramesh raised concerns over the delay in updates on election trends in the Haryana Assembly results on the Election Commission website. The grand old party said that they will file a complaint and a memorandum to EC over the alleged “unexplained slowdown” in updating of trends on the poll body’s website.
The party has refused to accept the “totally unexpected, completely surprising and counterintuitive” outcome. The Election Commission dismissed the allegations and reinstated that the election process in both Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir have been conducted in accordance with statutory requirements.
The assembly election results of the two states were highly significant, especially for the BJP. While Haryana has been under the rule of the BJP for the last two terms, out of the 90 assembly constituencies, many witnessed close contests between at least three candidates. The major parties vying for a majority in the state included the BJP, Congress, AAP, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).
Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir, the union territory will have an elected government after over six years since the coalition government of the PDP-BJP collapsed in June 2018. The overwhelming victory of the INDIA alliance is a crucial boost for them and a severe setback for the BJP.
