Haji Nurul Islam is the TMC candidate from Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency. This year, he replaced the Trinamool MP Nusrat Jahan, who won the election in 2019 votes against the BJP candidate from Basirhat. Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency will go for polls in the last phase of the elections on June 1, 2024. BJP has fielded Rekha Patra from the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency against the TMC candidate. Rekha Patra is a resident of Sandeshkhali. Rekha Patra was one of the first women who raised their voice in Sandeshkhali leading to the arrest of TMC leaders MLA Sheikh Shahjahan, Shibu Hazra, and Uttam Sardar.
Nurul Islam, the zari businessman, has been one of the prominent faces of the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. Haji Islam has been associated with the Trinamool Congress since its inception in 1998. Nurul Islam served as a member of the gram panchayat samiti between 2003 and 2008 from the Bahera village. In 2009, Haji Nurul Islam contested the Basirhat Lok Sabha elections and defeated CPI”s Ajay Chakraborty by over 60,000 votes. In 2016 and 2021 he secured the MLA seat in the assembly polls from the Haroa constituency.
Islam was accused of his alleged involvement in the 2010 Deganga riots and an FIR had been filed against him. BJP urged Election Commission to cancel the nomination of Haji Nurul Islam because of submitting invalid documents to the national poll panel while filing the nomination papers.
Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency is comprised of Baduria, Haroa, Minakhan, Sandeshkhali, Basirhat Dakshin, Basirhat Uttar and Hingalganj. All of the assembly seats in the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency were won by TMC in 2021. Since 1980 to 2009, the Basirhat seat has been a CPI stronghold while after 2009 the constituency has represented TMC candidates.
In 2019, Nusrat Jahan won on the TMC ticket with 54.56% votes and the BJP candidate secured 30.12% votes. The total voter”s turn out in the last Lok Sabha elections was 85.43%,
Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency is a general category parliament seat that comprises part of North 24 pargana district. Lok Sabha constituency literacy rate is 76.01%. The constituency has a significant proportion of muslim and SC population. The SC, ST and Muslim comprise 21.7%, 25.82% and 2.6% of the total population.
