High Voter Turnout In Kerala: 50 Constituencies Record Over 80% Polling
Thiruvananthapuram: More than 80 percent of the votes were recorded in more than 50 constituencies, including many notable constituencies in the Kerala Assembly elections 2026. Many of these constituencies had reported comparatively lower turnout in previous elections, making the positive rise this time a significant development. The unexpected increase in voter participation has added an element of uncertainty, leaving major political fronts of their prospects.
In key constituencies, turnout figures remained high. Ambalappuzha where prominent leader G. Sudhakaran, who defected from the CPI(M), contested, 80.75 percent of polling the votes were cast. After the voting, the CPI(M) alleged that there was an understanding between the UDF and the BJP here. Similarly, Payyannur saw 80.57% turnout, and in T.K. Govindan’s Taliparamba, 81.01 percent of the votes were polled. The polling also crossed 80 in Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s constituency, Dharmadom. In Malampuzha, where A Suresh, a confidant of late VS Achuthanandan, contested, the polling was 81.89 percent.
District-wise, Kasargod recorded more than 80% turnout only in 1 constituency. Kannur recorded more than 80% turnout in 4 constituencies. Wayanad recorded more than 80% turnout in 6 constituencies Kozhikode recorded more than 80% turnout in 10 constituencies, while Malappuram reported similar figures in 8 constituencies. Palakkad recorded more than 80% turnout in 6 constituencies. Ernakulam saw over 80% polling in 8 constituencies, including areas influenced by the Twenty20 strongholds. Alaphuzha recorded more than 80% turnout in 4 constituencies and Thiruvanthapuram recorded more than 80% turnout in 2 constituencies.
The data released by the Election Commission of India currently excludes service and home votes, and officials indicated that more constituencies could cross the 80% mark once the final figures are compiled, reinforcing the trend of high electoral participation across Kerala.
As fears about poll malpractices rose in the state, Opposition leader VD Satheesan and many other political leaders demanded the Election Commission of India to release complete data of the votes polled in the state on April 9.
The results will be announced on May 4.
