Basant Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has won the Dumka constituency seat, defeating Sunil Soren of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of 14,588 votes. Basant Soren secured 95,685 votes, while Sunil Soren got 81,097 votes in Jharkhand Assembly Election 2024.
Basant Soren is the sitting MLA from Dumka and the younger brother of Hemant Soren, the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand and the son of Shibu Soren, the founder-president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) political party. Basant has now retained the power in Dumka by winning this election.
Basant Soren was born on 1 September 1977. His educational qualification is Intermediate from Patna High School, Patna, Bihar.

Basant Soren contested in the Rajya Sabha elections in 2016 as a JMM candidate but lost. He contested in a 2020 by-election held for the Dumka Assembly as a JMM candidate and defeated his nearest BJP rival Louis Marandi by a margin of 6,842 votes.

Dumka has been one of the crucial seats in Jharkhand with a stronghold of the JMM party that has a monumental role in the political arena. This seat has been reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) with backward, minorities and also upper-class compatriots.
BJP’s Sunil Soren had a history of defeating the JMM candidates, especially the Soren family members. He dethroned JMM in the 2019 Lok Sabha Election.
