The 27-year-old Debangshu Bhattacharya emerged as the young face of TMC. He has been nominated from Tamluk, West Bengal to run for the upcoming 18th Lok Sabha elections.

Bhattacharya has been an active member of the TMC while studying engineering at Kolkata’s Elitte Institute of Engineering & Management. He played a key role in the TMC social media campaign during the 2021 assembly elections and was appointed the social media and IT cell head of Trinamool in 2022.

The party’s campaign song ‘Khela Hobe’ was also written by Bhattacharya and was used by CM Mamata Banerjee to attack BJP during the elections. Tamluk Lok Sabha seat is considered to be a stronghold of the Adhikari family. Speculation was that Dibyendu Adhikari would contest for BJP from the constituency, however, the BJP gave a ticket to former Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay this time from Tamluk. TMC tried to utilize his social media popularity in this constituency.

Bhattacharya was caught in a controversy recently after targeting BJP Bashirhat candidate Rekha Patra on X. The party attacked the BJP candidate for posting her document, “Caught red-handed!.@BJP4India’s MP candidate from Basirhat, Rekha Patra, plays the ultimate game of hypocrisy, enjoying the benefits of @MamataOfficial’s schemes while aligning herself with Delhi’s JOMIDARS. PM @narendramodi, the next time you call her, don’t forget to inquire about her Swasthya Sathi card. It might help you understand how our leader’s brainchild, Swasthya Sathi, surpasses the failed Ayushman Bharat scheme.”

Rekha Patra moved the Supreme Court against him for violation of her privacy. Patra”s lawyer wrote a letter to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes alleging the TMC nominee for sharing her private details such as phone number, bank account details, Swasthya Sathi and Duare Sarkar scheme.

All the seven assembly segments under the Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency are in Purba Medinipur district. Here, four of the seats are occupied by TMC candidates and three by BJP candidates. Since 2009, the seat has been occupied by the Adhikari family under TMC. TMC candidate secured 59.76 percent of votes in the 2019 elections. It is a general category seat with a 76.99 percent literacy rate. The Muslim, SC, and ST population is 14.59 percent, 14.6 percent and 0.5% respectively. The economy of the district is based on agriculture. In 2006, the Ministry of Panchayat Raj announced it as one of the country’s 250 most backward districts.
