Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and State Congress President Kamal Nath has submitted his nomination to contest election from his hometown, Chhindwara. He was accompanied by his son and Congress MP Nakul Nath, daughter-in-law Priya Nath, and a large group of Congress workers and leaders.

Mr Nath, the face of the party in the upcoming assembly election, is currently in the news for his controversial remarks.

After submitting nomination, he met reporters and told them that he has full faith in the voters of Chhindwara.

Chhindwara has been regarded as Mr Nath”s domain for about 40 years. The Congress leader represented the constituency in the Lok Sabha for nine consecutive terms and became the 18th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh in 2018. Nonetheless, he tasted defeat at the hands of BJP leader Sundar Lal Patwa in the 1997 Parliamentary by-election.

One of the longest-serving members of the Lok Sabha, Mr Nath held significant positions including Minister of Urban Development, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, and Pro-Tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha. However, he could serve as Chief Minister only for 15 months as Jyotiraditya Scindia left Congress and joined the BJP. Many MLAs followed Scindia, and as a result, the government fell down. He was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from March 2020 to April 2022.

Though Congress has not officially projected Mr Nath as the Chief Ministerial candidate, he is positioned as the face of the party in assembly polls. Recently, Mr Nath has been in the midst of controverses surrounding the seat sharing issues with Akhilesh Yadav”s Samajwadi Party (SP) and Nitish Kumar”s JD(U).

The assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh will take place on November 17, and the results will be out on December 3. The election will be conducted in one phase for 230 assembly constituencies.
