UDF Eyes Landslide Victory In Kondotty

The electoral battle in Kondotty has reached a fever pitch as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) aims for a historic majority, while the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has deployed one of its strongest assets, Dr. P. Jiji, in a calculated move to reclaim the constituency. The contest is primarily a face-off between two young, dynamic leaders, making it one of the most watched fights in the district, as well as in the constituency. The constituency reported a voting percentage of 82.5, an increase from 2021’s 79.97.

While initial poll trends suggest a significant edge for the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate T.P. Ashraf Ali, the LDF is banking on its previous performance to pull off an upset in this traditional IUML stronghold.

Historical data underscores the challenge facing the challengers; the IUML has held the seat continuously since the 1970s, represented by veterans like P. Seethi Haji and more recently by T.V. Ibrahim.

In the 2016 elections, the LDF managed to put up a stiff challenge, successfully narrowing the UDF majority to approximately 10,000 votes. This momentum continued into the 2021 Assembly elections, where T.V. Ibrahim secured 82,759 votes (50.42%) against the LDF’s 65,093, resulting in a victory margin of 17,666 votes. However, the LDF’s influence at the grassroots level has faced recent setbacks; in the latest local body elections, the Left front failed to secure significant wins in the constituency, with the exception of the Vazhayur region.

Adding a new dimension to the triangular contest is the steady rise of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), represented this time by P. Subhramanyan. Political analysts note that the NDA has successfully doubled its presence in the constituency. While the BJP candidate secured 11,114 votes (6.77%) in 2021, the coalition’s vote bank has effectively expanded from the 5,000-vote mark in previous cycles to nearly 10,000. While still in third place, this growth is being viewed as a significant factor that could impact the final margins of the two major fronts.
