The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) is all set for a second term in the northeastern state. The result for the assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim will be announced today. SKM has won 18 seats. Voting was held in 32 assembly seats of Sikkim on April 19.

The majority mark in the Sikkim legislative assembly is 17 seats. In 2019, the SKM had ended the 25-year rule of the SDF by winning 17 seats against 15 of Pawan Chamling’s party.

Mr Tamang after winning the election said that he was confident about his party securing a second term as they worked hard for the betterment of the people of Sikkim. “I thank the people of Sikkim and our party workers. We worked for the people with all our heart. That’s why we have won,” he said.

SKM chief PS Tamang won the Rhenock assembly seat by defeating SDF’s Som Nath Poudyal by 7,044 votes. While opposition leader and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) supremo Chamling has lost both from the seats he was contesting. So far, SDF has only won from one seat, Shyari where they have fielded turncoat candidate Tenzing Norbu Lamtha.

SKM fought in the election alone as the BJP broke the alliance with it. The state assembly election was held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls on April 19.

PS Golay is a significant figure in politics. He has formed the party after parting ways with Pawan Kumar Chamling, the leader of SDF.

Meanwhile, in the Arunachal Pradesh state assembly election, Bharatiya Janata Party has won over 37 seats and is set for their second consecutive term. Candidates from a total of ten seats were elected unopposed including the chief minister  Pema Khandu, who has won three of his four terms as MLA without a contest.
