Uttam Barik is a TMC sitting MLA from Patashpur. Barik is going to contest the upcoming 18th Lok Sabha elections from the Kanthi constituency. BJP has fielded Soumendu Adhikari to fight from Kanthi. Thevoting in the Kanthi Lok Sabha will be held on May 25.

Kanthi Lok Sabha constituency was represented by the TMC sincee 1999, except in 2004, in which CPI emerged victorius in the constituency.

From 2009, TMC”s Sisir Kumar Adhikari has been winning from the counstituency.

West Bengal Leader of Opposition of Legislative Assembly and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, Dibyendu Adhikari who was elected to Lok Sabha in 2019 from Tamluk as a TMC candidate and recently joined BJP and BJP”s Kanthi candidate Soumendu Adhikari are Sisir”s children.

Barik is 46 years old and with a secondary level of school education. Uttam Barik was recently caught making a woman uncomfortable by an inappropriate gesture. At a government event Uttam Barik brazenly groped a female beneficiary. The incident attracted criticism over women”s safety and Opposition in the state BJP drawn a comparison with the Sandeshkhali incident.

The opposition criticized him by sharing the picture on social media via X.

The constituency has 7 assembly segments lying in Purba Medinipur district. In the last assembly election, 4 seats were won by BJP and 3 by AITC.  Since 2019, the constituency has been a stronghold of Adhikari’s from TMC. Sisir Kumar Adhikari has been a ruling MP from the seat since 2009. However, in the last general elections, the BJP recorded great success by securing an additional 33.54 percent votes. Whereas TMC votes registered a drop of 3.82 percent.

As per the census, it has 89.7 percent Hindu population and Muslim voters are around 11.6%/ The urban and rural population share is 30.85 percent and 69.15 percent. The last voter turnout was 84.21 percent.
