The trailer of Emergency, based on the emergency declared by former prime minister Indira Gandhi sparked outrage and faced severe backlash. Scheduled to hit the theaters on September 6, the movie was postponed since the Sikh organization objected to its release and accused the filmmakers of misrepresenting the community and twisting historical facts.

A legal notice was issued by the SGPC to the producers, alleging that certain scenes in the trailer were “anti-Sikh” and hurt the sentiments of the community. The SGPC has since reached out to both the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to seek a ban on the film.

As this issue created unrest, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday refused to order the CBFC to urgently issue a certificate for Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency, but instructed the board to address any objections or representations by September 18. The actress tweeted, “High Court has blasted the censor for illegally withholding the certificate of  Emergency.”

Moreover, the actor-politician also voiced her opinion over the movie’s ban. Slamming the censorship, she said, “The Law of the land is that one can show the unimaginable amount of violence and nudity on OTT platforms without any consequence or censorship, one can even distort real-life events to suit their politically motivated sinister motives, there is all the freedom for communists or leftists across the world for such anti-national expressions but as a nationalist no OTT platform allows us to make films that revolve around the integrity and unity of Bharat, it seems censorship is only for some of us who don’t want tukde of this nation and make films on historic facts. It’s hugely demotivating and unjust.”
