Pakistani musician Haniya Aslam, one-half of the band Zeb-Haniya, died on Sunday. Her cousin and former band member, Zeb Bangash, shared the heartbreaking news on social media.

Known for her Coke Studio hits Laili Jaan, Bibi Sanam, Paimona, and Chup, Haniya Aslam died of cardiac arrest in her late 30s. The death of the artist was disclosed on Monday when Zeb posted an old picture of Haniya and wrote “Hanini.” This post shocked followers and the comment section has been flooded with shock and condolences by the fans.

Considered as one of the finest Pakistani musicians, Haniya with her duo Zeb has created many successful compositions under their band. Starting in 2007, with their first album Chup, the duo was later invited to sing in Coke Studio Pakistan, bringing them more fame, especially in India. The singer created her melodious impact in India with the film Lipstick Under My Burkha (2016), which struck a chord with the popular culture in India. It was then performed in Coke Studio Pakistan by Aslam and Bangash in 2013.

However, Haniya moved to Canada in 2014 to pursue a solo career and learn more about music. She also worked as a sound designer for the 2016 Pakistani drama short film Lala Begum. Haniya created music for the 2016 romantic Pakistani film Dobara Phir Se. She represented Pakistan’s youth music in the world and also co-authored one of the few books written about contemporary youth music in her country. Her death is a great loss to the Pakistan music industry.
