Panjab ’95, the much talked-about film by actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, has been the centre of controversies ever since its announcement. And now, after being delayed for over a year, the film is again postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.

The upcoming period drama featuring Diljit, directed by Honey Deharan, portrays the life of prominent Sikh human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. The film, which was scheduled to hit theatres on February 7, was postponed by the makers.

The announcement was made by the sensational Punjabi singer on his Instagram story. He wrote, “We are sorry, and it pains us to inform you that the movie Panjab ’95 will not release on 7th Feb due to circumstances beyond our control.”

The singer-actor also shared a picture of the late Khalra in one of his other stories, along with a quote from him that read, “Pray to the Guru, who identified with truth, to keep this light lit.”

The trailer for the film was launched by the rapper on Instagram three days before the postponement. Moreover, the film has been facing hurdles in the CBFC certification process since 2022. The film, which was then titled Ghalughara, which was titled after the Ghalughara massacre, was then retitled to the current one under the objection of the board.

The CBFC also made 120 cuts in the film. However, after the intervention of SGPC, the movie has been decided to be released uncut, but with its new title, Panjab ’95.

In January, Diljit reshared a new trailer of the film on Instagram and announced that the film would be released internationally on February 7 without any cuts. However, there was no update on an India release.

In 2023, the film was set to get its world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) but was removed from the lineup just a day before the premiere date. Reports suggest that the film was removed from Toronto due to the ‘political forces at play’ in the film.

Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist from Punjab, fought against alleged fake encounters of Sikh youths by Punjab Police during militancy. He investigated the mass cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies in Punjab between 1984 and 1994.

In 1995, he mysteriously disappeared, and a decade later, in 2005, four police officers were arrested for his alleged abduction and murder. His life and death are a controversial part of the state’s sensitive history, particularly the connections with militancy. Panjab’95 promises to tell an ‘honest’ account of his life, which has ruffled many feathers in the state.
