Stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui won Bigg Boss 17 title on Sunday defeating actor Abhishek Kumar in the finale. Along with the trophy, the 32-year-old has won Rs 50 lakh cash prize, and a car. Apart from comedy, Munawar Faruqui is a known singer and rapper. He attained fame through his stand-up performances and was also popular as a rapper on YouTube.

The life story of the comedian-turned-reality TV star is quite eventful. Hailing from Gujarat”s Junagadh, financial difficulties posed Faruqui to left studies at a younger age and start working. After his mother”s demise, in 2007, his family comprising father, three sisters and him, shifted to Mumbai. He started doing many jobs to earn money; at the age of 17, at his job at a utensil store, he was reportedly paid Rs. 60 per day for a 13-hour-long shift. In the evenings, he had taken up a Graphic Designing course and it landed him in a job as a graphic designer.

The stand-up comedy happened to Munawar, when he realised that he has the ability to entertain everyone. Following, he started his own YouTube channel where he uploaded his stand-up performances, roast videos, rap songs and music videos. His popular stand-up videos are “Dawood, Yamraaj & Aurat”, “Doctor & Engineer”, “Ghost Story”, “Kaala Jaadu”, and “Politics in India, Instagram & Sign boards”. Some of his prominent music albums are “Noor”, “Khwahish”, and “Munawar”.

Munawar Faruqui, suddenly hit headlines when he got booked for allegedly insulting Hindu gods, and hurting Hindu religious sentiments in jokes. On January 1, 2021, during the onset of his comedy programme, Munawar was arrested from a cafe in Madhya Madhya Pradesh”s Indore based on a complaint filed by Eklavya Singh Gaur, chief of Hindutva group Hind Rakshak Sangathan. The complainant claimed that he overheard comedian”s “hurtful” jokes during the rehearsal, so he had spent 37 days in jail for jokes he didn”t crack. Munawar Faruqui”s arrest has been heavily criticised by the public as an attack on freedom of speech. Following the rage, the comedian hinted that he will quit stand-up comedy as 12 of his shows got cancelled due to mounting pressure from right-wing groups.

In 2022, he ventured into the field of reality tv by joining as a contestant on television show “Lock Upp” hosted by Kangana Ranaut and won the show”s first season. It was in October last year, Munawar entered the 17th season of the “Bigg Boss” and emerged victorious on Sunday. When a January inflicted unforgettable jail experience and traumatic hate messages and death threats to the comedian, cut to 2023, an end of January two years later, he is currently a celebrated entertainment figure loved and admired in the country.

Munawar Faruqui has a five-year-old son with his ex-wife, Jasmine whom he divorced in 2022.
