Kerala Politicians Including Rahul Mamkootathil and T Siddique Rally Behind Empuraan As Right Wing Attacks Mohanlal's Political Thriller

The release of Empuraan, starring Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, has sparked intense controversy, particularly among right-wing groups in India. These factions have vehemently criticised the film, alleging that it promotes anti-Hindu sentiments and depicts the Hindu community as villains.

The movie, a political thriller helmed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, has been hailed for its bold exploration of political and communal issues, with some describing it as a sharp critique of right-wing extremism and its effect on India’s secular fabric.

The story, which touches upon sensitive topics such as the Gujarat riots and the use of political power to suppress opposition, has become a subject for controversy. The film’s villainous character, Bajrangi, is said to bear a resemblance to Babu Bajrangi, a controversial figure associated with the 2002 Gujarat riots.

This portrayal has been now sparked outrage among right-wing groups, who accuse the filmmakers of painting Hindus as perpetrators of violence and sowing division.

In the wake of the film’s release, a massive hate campaign has unfolded, with right-wing politicians and social media users launching attacks on the movie, its cast, and crew. Empuraan has been targeted for allegedly promoting a “Hinduphobic” agenda, with critics claiming that it undermines Hindu pride and glorifies secularism.

However, in the midst of the ongoing debate, Rahul Mankootathil, a prominent political figure and MLA from Palakkad, Youth Congress State President of Kerala, shared his thoughts defending the film’s narrative.

He wrote on Facebook: “When KGF and Pushpa made waves across Kerala, the response was one of awe and admiration. But when Empuraan arrived, some voices began to express jealousy, questioning why we couldn’t have a movie like this. The film’s narrative not only highlights regional pride but also confronts the political and communal agendas attempting to destroy Kerala’s secularism. Empuraan showcases these issues without resorting to glorifying any ideology. Instead, it presents an honest portrayal of the challenges we face in maintaining the integrity of our society.”

Kalpetta MLA T Siddique has come forward to address the growing hate campaign against Empuran, calling attention to the political and social undertones affecting artistic freedom in India.

He pointed out that the same individuals who claim to champion “creative freedom” while pushing propaganda through films funded by right-wing organisations are now leading a significant attack on Empuran.

He wrote on Facebook: “In a democratic country like India, if we are not allowed to criticize the ruling government through our art, then what right do we have to criticize nations like Taliban-controlled Afghanistan or Iran?” he asked, stressing that creative expression should not be stifled.”

Social media coordinator of the Congress party Vijay Thottathil, took to platforms like X to respond to the criticism.

He strongly refuted the attacks, stating, “It exposes the harsh reality of the Gujarat riots. The main villain is Bajrangi, a character who will remind you of Babu Bajrangi from the 2002 riots. The film exposes the communal agenda of the Hindutva gang, shows how the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is used to suppress opposition, and highlights issues like smuggling and narcotics trafficking along the coastline. The movie sends a powerful message that communal forces will destroy Kerala’s secularism and brotherhood.”

Many argue that the movie brings attention to vital issues and exposes the undercurrents of political power and its manipulation for divisive purposes.

However, right-wing extremists and other individuals continue to spread hate, claiming that the film is a blatant Hindu-bashing propaganda that portrays Hindus as villains, despite the ongoing persecution of Hindus across the subcontinent, including India.

Numerous social media accounts, particularly those associated with Hindu extremist beliefs and other right-wing groups, have been sharing negative reviews about the movie.
