National Awards Jury Member On Why Mammootty Did Not Get Best Actor Honour

Mammootty Not Nominated For National Film Awards: Jury Member MB Padmakumar

As the 70th National Film Awards were announced earlier today, a section of fans down south is disappointed with the results. Fans all around expressed their displeasure after Mammootty failed to win the Best Actor award for Nissam Basheer’s Roschach and Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam – both acclaimed films.

The Best Actor award went to Rishab Shetty for the Kannada film Kantara. This came as a shock to many, as Mammootty, reportedly, was considered one of the strongest contenders for the category with solid performances to back him up.

Across social media, many fans made remarks expressing anger at the jury’s “biased behaviour,” with some even alleging that Shetty won the award because he was a “BJP devotee.” Photos of the actor posing with PM Modi surfaced again on X to seemingly substantiate the allegation.

However, a recent update in the saga came from jury member MP Padmakumar. In a video shared by ‘The Cue Studio,’ Padmakumar states that the Malayalam acting legend’s name was never featured for any category in the National Film Awards as the list from the southern languages did not include any of Mammootty films.

That’s right. According to Padmakumar, who was part of the South Jury of National Film Awards, none of Mammootty’s films were nominated from the South industry for a National Film Award.

Explaining the process of finalising the nominations, Padmakumar stated that every jury member puts in their suggestions for each category, and when a unanimous decision is not reached, the decision goes for voting. The film with the highest votes goes ahead for the final jury.

Highlighting the rumours that led to questions being raised on the integrity of the National Awards, Padmakumar stated that it was important to check the authenticity of such speculations before raising baseless doubts.
